Ethiopia and UAE expand coding programme to seven million
Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates agreed on July 6 in Dubai to expand the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders initiative to seven million participants, after the programme passed its original target 18 months early.
Enrolment reached 5,005,146 by June 2026, the two governments said, against a goal set when the initiative launched in July 2024.
The programme offers free online training in programming, data analysis, Android development and artificial intelligence fundamentals, with certificates issued by Udacity.
At least half of all participants are meant to be women, a target carried over from the programme’s design.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed urged students to enrol during the summer break and return to class as certified digital leaders.
For families here whose relatives are job-hunting in Addis, a free internationally recognised certificate is one of the few credentials available without tuition or travel.

Robotic surgery training centre opens in Addis Ababa
The China-Africa Robotic Surgery Training Center and the China-Africa Endoscopic Technology Training Center were unveiled July 27 at Silk Road General Hospital in Addis Ababa.
About 40 trainees from Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Libya and Ethiopia took part in the first endoscopy training programme, taught by Chinese specialists.
President Taye Atske Selassie spoke at the launch, which was held under the China-Africa Hospital Alliance.
Organisers said the alliance is building long-term arrangements for knowledge sharing and staff exchange between Chinese and African medical institutions.

Ethio Telecom reports 215.8 billion birr in annual revenue
Ethio Telecom collected 215.8 billion birr in revenue during the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year, chief executive Frehiwot Tamiru said at a press briefing in Addis Ababa on July 23.

Ethiopian and American business leaders meet in Addis Ababa
Ethiopian officials and American investors held a public-private dialogue in Addis Ababa on July 23 aimed at removing barriers to investment between the two countries.
