Ethiopia posts record $11.2 billion in exports, begins trading under African free trade pact
Ethiopia earned a record $11.195 billion from exports in the fiscal year that ended July 7, surpassing its $9.4 billion target, Trade and Regional Integration Minister Kassahun Gofe said July 10 at a sector forum in Hawassa.
The country also shipped its first goods under the African Continental Free Trade Area during the year — $15 million worth, out of $23 million traded under the framework in the region.
Kassahun said Ethiopia has begun applying AfCFTA procedures for both air and land cargo, which is expected to speed cross-border trade.
More than 3.4 million business licenses were issued through digital platforms during the year as trade services moved online.

Ethiopia issued a record 1.6 million passports last year — and 33,000 diaspora ID cards
Ethiopia’s Immigration and Citizenship Service issued more than 1.6 million passports and collected 42.7 billion birr in revenue during the fiscal year ended July 7, the agency said at its annual review on July 21.
The service also issued nearly 33,000 Ethiopian-origin identity cards — the document that lets diaspora members who hold foreign citizenship live, work and invest in Ethiopia — along with more than one million visas and 21,163 residence permits.
Director General Selamawit Dawit credited the record to digital reforms, including the biometric e-passport launched in February 2025 with an embedded chip carrying fingerprint and facial data.

First American Space in southern Ethiopia opens at Hawassa University
A new American Space opened at Hawassa University on July 21, the seventh in Ethiopia and the first in the south of the country.
U.S. Ambassador Ervin Massinga cut the ribbon alongside Hawassa University President Chirotaw Ayele, Sidama Region Vice President Beyene Berasa and Hawassa Deputy Mayor Agena Neto.
The centre, at the university’s College of Agriculture, is free to visit and open to all, offering English-language resources, skills courses, and programming in innovation and artificial intelligence.
University officials described it as a hub for educational exchange between the peoples of Ethiopia and the United States.
Hawassa is already home to 127 alumni of U.S. embassy exchange programmes, including the English Access Scholarship Program.

Ethiopia sets $10 million bar for its 10-year “Golden Visa,” launching this fiscal year

Minnesota hosts the largest Ethiopian diaspora gathering in the world
The 43rd annual tournament of the Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America ran June 27 to July 4 in the Twin Cities, bringing 32 teams and tens of thousands of visitors to Minnesota for a week of soccer, music and culture.
